How to Increase Productivity In Gear Cutting

Learn about how the superior purity of ASP PM HSS material can help you to increase your productivity. Its improved material cleanliness, combined with high performance PVD coatings, enables increased cutting speed, longer tool life and higher tool reliability when machines run unmanned. This fact is also true for gear cutting in dry conditions without coolant.

Energy Efficient Motor and Drive Systems
How much can switching to an energy-efficient motor save? What is the relationship between motor efficiency and complete system efficiency? Does adding a variable speed drive make a system more efficient?  For industrial machinery users, energy conservation typically involves a premium efficient motor on the driving system. Motor efficiency gains, however, depend on the remaining components of a power transmission system. How drives and gears are selected and configured will determine overall system efficiency.

Learn how to maximize efficiency gains by evaluating the entire electro-mechanical power transmission system, including motors, drives, and gears. Find out how an optimal power transmission system "pays back" through power savings, lower maintenance, and reduced carbon emissions.

Kleiss Gears, Inc.
Metal to Plastic Gear Conversion
A successful conversion from metal to plastic gears requires particular focus. Loads and speeds are important of course, but there are a number of other factors to be considered such as design, materials, tolerances, inspection methods, duty cycle, environment and stiffness to name just a few.

1:30 PM
AKGears, Thermotech

Design Essentials for Plastic Gear Performance
Despite fundamental differences in manufacturing technology and material response to operating conditions, in most cases the machined metal gear design methodology and accuracy standards are also used for plastic molded gears. Such an approach limits the performance of plastic gears and their application area. Thermotech presents an application of the Direct Gear Design method for plastic gear development, which significantly opens those limits. Also, the presentation will suggest plastic gear design guidelines and describe specifics of the tooling development.

How Developments in Straight Bevel Gear Mfg.
The manufacturing of straight bevel gears on free form machines was introduced only three years ago and went through many advances within a short period of time. Today, Coniflex carbide stick blade cutters that enable a very fast, dry and clean cutting process are available for the entire band width of straight bevel gears with diameters ranging from 10mm to 600mm. In order to reduce cutting times even more and enhance rolling performance at the same time, a Coniflex Formate version has been developed and successfully applied in the industry. Now, straight bevel gear cutting times are equal to those of spiral bevel and hypoid gears, which is a reduction vs. conventional cutting of 50% and more. As a reliable hard finishing of straight bevel gears, a CBN grinding process has been developed and applied to several high precision straight bevel gears. The presentation will be an update regarding dry cutting, Formate geometry and grinding of straight bevel gears.

2:30 PM
ALD-Holcroft
Low Distortion Heat Treatment Solutions
Distortion of gears resulting from heat treatment requires additional hard machining. This contributes significantly to the total manufacturing costs of high performance gears. New heat treatment technologies, such as low pressure carburizing and high pressure gas quenching, provide the ultimate solutions to reduce distortion of high precision gears. Influences on process parameters are discussed and examples of successful gear distortion reduction programs are represented.

Next Burning Question -- Freedom from AGMA 2007-B92
?
You've invested a lot in the gear that you have hardened and ground to final dimensions. Do you know if the teeth will crack, spall, or fail in some way once in service? AGMA's Surface Temper Etch Inspection After Grinding describes a class of defects called grinder burn. This presentation introduces a simple, non-destructive technique which reveals the faults in heat treatments and grinding protocols that lead to burn.

Gear Market Forecast

Dr. Mike Bradley will bring us up-to-date on worldwide economic trends, identifying the key factors now driving the global economy and the critical elements to watch. While broad economic forecasts are readily available, it is difficult to find economic analyses focused on the gear industry. However, Dr. Mike will do exactly that and give insight into future market conditions.

Dr. Bradley has been studying the economics of the gear industry for more than 20 years and provides an invaluable service to AGMA by acting as our economic consultant and forecaster.

1:30 PM
Dr. Kaiser Diamantwerkzeuge GmbH & Co. KG
Rotary Diamond Dressing Solutions for Gear Grinding

Diamond dressing is an important component to gear grinding. Accuracy of the gear tooth form is directly related to the accuracy of diamond dressing tool. Dr. Kaiser is a leading producer of rotary diamond dressing tools for profile, continuous generating and bevel gear grinding applications. We will present information on different dressing tool designs for various gear grinding machine types.
Flexibility of dressing solutions and speed of dressing is contingent on size of production lots and variability of tooth form design. These factors can effect which dresser design can offer the lowest production cost.

Workholding Solutions

A look into the key components which add up to make preferred workholding for operations, including hobbing, shaping, shaving, grinding and inspection. How proper workholding can save money in other areas such as tooling cost. Also, what workpiece designers should be thinking about when they design a new workpiece; how will this new workpiece be processed; and how will it be held during the different machining or inspection processes.

Gear Machining on Deckel Maho; DMG 5 - Axes Universal Milling Machine
Imagine the flexibility of having one machine capable of milling, turning, tapping and gear cutting with deburring included for hard and soft material. The technology to manufacture gears on non-gear-dedicated, muli-axis machines, has existed for a few years in Europe, but has not yet ventured into mainstream manufacturing. Deckel Maho Pfronten, a member of the Gildemeister Group, took the sales plunge this year, making the technology available on most of its 2009 machines.
